Tough one this cuz ive noticed dj's including DanTheDoc on here mixes tracks from not just the start. Me personaly i mix each track from the start.Sometimes you'll have to beat match quickly to get the next tune in before the vocal or break and sometimes both tracks can be mixed for longer than a minute, ive got a mix at the mo that i have 2 tracks mixing for about 5 minutes, just depends on the tracks mate and the bars.
Hard to explain lol

cheers TigerLand i sort of know most of that i just seam to be doing something wrong but can't put my finger on it.

I think if a song changes on 16 beats and the other one changes on 32 beats then i start my mix on the next 16 beats so the changes both happen at the same time on the next 32 yeah?????

If anyone can help me as this is a big thing for me

Cheers

Whatever the tune mate, say the tune your playing is The Freemasons - Love On My Mind (for example) me personaly i would have the next tune's baseline playing away under the vocals(the last lot of vocals),mixer only slightly to the middle and then when the vocals end i'd have it timed that the next tune comes rolling in.Maybe i have to start the next track a few bars before the tune i'm playing kicks in and sometimes you have to roll the next track in a few bars after the kick in.You just keep trying to place the next track at different places on the current track and it will get there.Trial and error mate but you will get there.
By the way all dj's are the same, you have to run through the tracks a few times to get where they fit, simple as that.
Cool

My felow dj has given some good technical advice.

One thing I have found to help me is to get the next record ready on cue, check it roughly fits (give it a quick pitch fix). Then get the headphones off (quickly) and get back to listenening the tune playing until you think it needs a new kick.
Its too easy to get into the next tune in the headphones and ignore the one playing.... then when you get back to that tune you can sometimes feel lost.
When you are out dancing or just listening to a dj, you can easily tell where the tune should start coming in.

Does that help ??

This will help you a great deal....

Music Production with Mixing

In music there are what you would call events. These events are Minor and Major events.
Minors are introduced in music at the 16th beat ( new instrument or sound )
Major Events are introduced in music at the 32th and 64th beat (which are mainly Sweeps, Crashes Effect etc.)

Counts, Cues and Mixing

Count is very important in Djing and music production.
At the end of Track 1 you will have and event occur at 64th and the 32 beat till the end of the song . Have Track 2 cued to the beginning. ( 1st beat preferred ) and start at the 64th beat on track 1 (Which will be signified with an event ) and try to have the 2 songs beat matched within 16-32 beats.

Start mixing at the 32 beats before Track 1 ends and the Event on Track 2 will occur as Track 1 Ends. Which should result in a smooth transition between the songs

You want to hold the mix for at least 32 beats. Holding the mix for 64 + beats and your rocking it.... Some songs just work together and are easy to hold for minutes. Holding mixes for minutes show Skill.
While some track are very difficult to told together no matter how many times you try

Lots of Dj's slam mix and go from one track to the next during and event which works sometimes depending on your style and the song your playing. (The harder the music the more slam mixing works)

Slam mixing Does not work at all with deep house. Slam mix playing Deep House and you'll probably get hit with a tomato. and ppl looking at your like
Shocked

If I Slam Mix it would be slamming a track in and the fading the other track out over a span of 32 beats.

Knowing You Record

Its very important to know the songs or tracks also. Sometimes you will have 2 songs mixed and they sound good together, but is alot of stuff going on..and when one of the songs end you will lose energy. and the mix becomes flat. If that happens try to fatten it up with effects if you can
Flange or Delays seem to work for me.

Hope this helps you.

After the first major breakdown of the track your playing. By the time you've gotten half way through your record or sometimes 3/4 depending on the track of course I feel you should at least have your next track cued or ready to drop. You know the feeling when you listening to a track for awhile and then there is a huge silent breakdown in the middle? Your mind is already anticipating a big change when the beats return or at least a minor change. So this is a good time to bring your next tune in. This will keep the crowd interested as opposed to the same old beat returning yet again ya know. You will know when it's time or past time when you get that feeling like man this has been playing for awhile!!?? (It's time)

I like listining to the whole song and just picking out my favorite parts. To me, my favorite parts are the ones that rock with deep bass, I try to eliminate a lot of the downtempo/no bass stuff, but every once in a while it's cool to change it up.
Sometimes I like all six minutes of a track, and sometimes I like just 30-50 seconds. I try to set it up so I'll have a couple tracks that I want to use 2-3 minutes of, follow it with a 30 second piece, then go into the 6 minute banger. So, to me, a lot more records become useable.

one thing i'm gonna say about this since i'm just roaming around on the forum here and i know that this isn't the best advice but you have to feel it mate.........

trial and error is the first part and you have to remember not to get discouraged and have fun with it otherwise you're not gonna be happy with what you're doing.
counting beats and bars is probably the first step and listening to where things come in and go out in the tunes is the next.

really difficult to say where to begin tunes when you mix different genres together unless you wanna be boring and for example just stick to one genre, but you won't advance very much that way if you ask me

listen to other peoples mixes also.......LOADS and try and decipher what they're doing......first time you probably won't be able to unless you know the tunes but listen to them a few times and you'll be able to hear exactly what's going on since your brain knows what to expect

hope that helps
