Ok so im looking for your opinions here as many DJ's do this differently i don't believe there is a right way or wrong way but....

If you have a tune with no beginning beats, just a vocal or melodic start, do you:

A. Don't bother to mix the tune and start it from the beginning, crossfadering it over when the other tune has finished
B. Skip the tune to the first beat and begin to beatmatch, then bring that tune in at the beats
C. Other

Not sure what 'other' could be to be honest lol but what do you guys do when you come to a situation like this?

I have a lot of tunes like this i tend to see how it sounds at the beginning before deciding what to do although i don't want to come across as lazy by just crossfadering it but sometimes there is nothing else you can do....

2 things for me is if its that good of a tune then possibly an opener but i tend to run the opening through a few times then you sorta get used to the opening and maybe little sound effects timed with the beat and then usualy the beat comes in on or slighty off the playing tunes beat. Mixing of with just the beats is just as good though Spot on

Most of the time those are the radio mixes. It will be a 3-5 minute song that has barely any intro and barely any outro. If its not a track then it was definitely not made to be dj friendly.

When I have a track like this I throw it in any program that you can manipulate a wav in (Sound Forge, Live, FL, WaveLab, etc.).

Find a loop thats 8-32 beats long that is the minimalist loop of the track and then copy and paste it for a good 30 or so seconds at the start. This is all experimental though and getting it to be on beat perfectly can vary from program to program because some programs have tools that can match the beat of the songs to the markers, others might not have this tool so it can be harder. But basically, make yourself an intro to the song using elements from the song. Outros work the same too.

For me even though I'm still a newbie it depends on what I'm moving from and to. Some tracks I will let the lyrics play over the beat of the previous track for 1 phase or 2 and then when the bass decides to kick in drop the first track out.

Because I mainly play Electro though its not usual for Vocals to start off a track that generally only occurs for me when I play Funky Vocal/House.

Nice replys there cheers guys. I've been collecting all the older stuff latley and most of them don't have any beats at the intro e.g. Blackbox - Ride on time, Bassheads - Is there anybody out there etc basically all the older House stuff is a real pain! I'm just gonna mess about and see what sounds best, i suppose a lot depends on the tune as well

Spot on

I love old/classic house tunes, not got any myself but nothing better than stomping around in a club to a few tunes. Had it Sunday night @ Mud Club when the DJ dropped Show Me Love, just can't beat that bassline lol Very Happy

Classic track.

It took Robin long enough to bring out a good follow up to it!!!

I don't come across it very often, but I have, and I also have some tracks that start off with eerie noises and such which is almost the same as just having vocals, and yes, I do have the club versions.

What I do with it depends on the song itself. Generally I fast forward in the song to where there is a beat, and get that matched up with the song that's already playing. Then go back to the beginning of the song and start it when the time is right. I then bend the pitch a little to match the new song with the current one, since the bpm's are the same, it's not too hard. I just try to keep it matched and let the vocals play over the previous song. Usually works well!

Depends on the track imo, some tracks you can tell whether you got it locked even without beats, some tracks are just plain weird and you have no clue, so in that case i spin it straight to the beats and start from there.

Either of these works. Like said before, it depends on the track and how it builds upon itself.
Both good quotes though. Not much else to say after these.
