Hi mate in my opinion basically all you need is 2 turntables, a mixer, stereo system (or amp) with speakers, records and a phono to phono cable. (This is what i started out on anyway). There is loads of information on the internet you can use to know how to set up the deck setup once you have all the required equipment. Then you can expand on your equipment in the future once you get into it and maybe buy more expensive or advanced stuff. If your on an average budget just look towards direct drive turntables with a reliable mixer i would say. Look for reviews on different turntables and mixers on the internet e.g. "www.decks.co.uk"

I would get into mixing before making tunes Smile

Good advice as always from the smittydj Cool

If i was starting over again i wouldnt even go near Belt Drives, totaly messes you up when you get to the big leagues of Direct Drives.Even today if i go to someones house and they have belts drives i have no clue how to go back to that old mixing, you sorta remember having to push them of a bit harder but then the way you slow the pitch down is different...so just go straight to directs mate. Some brilliant cheap deals around these days too,no better time to get a good dj package.
Thing is though, are you wanting the oldskool way with records or the new skool way of cd decks?

thanks to the 2 of you, the info you've given me has really helped.
im looking for the best way, but seeing as i have like 400 albums on cd's, i could do with the cd decks, can you scratch the cd's on them? would the disc not get a bit of wear and tear?
i also like the idea of using the old school way with records, and seeing as im a hardcore dance fan, i will probably stick with the old school way

i could get both but ill look into them. i dont know enough about cd decks but ill search the internet.
thanks again,
hA

Havnt a clue about cd decks myself but one thing i'd hate is being half way through a mix and the thing starts skipping Confused
There are cd deck users on here so hopefully they can give you more insight.
Into Hardcore? What dj's you like at the mo?
Whats the hardcore scene like in Cardiff?

Never heard of scratching with a cd deck, might be able to do it with the one's with the turntable like platters e.g. Pioneer CDJ-1000? Like Tigerland said someone on here will be into cd decks a lot more than us lol.

I'd stick with using vinyl then move into cd decks which i'm doing. Becomes easier to understand DJ'n then but suppose it's hard getting all the older (better) hardcore vinyl isn't it Sad

I'm into DJ Tiesto, The Tidy Boys, BK, DJ Hype, Grooverider, Pendulum, J Majik, Hellfish, The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Pete Tong, Kevin & Perry (Kevin & Perry go large), and loaaaads of other songs and artists whom I don't know their name but i know the song to hear. I can't think of any more at the moment I'm only out of bed!

I'm from Dublin but I'm living in Cardiff the last 3 months, I'm stayin here for a year or so, but I'm not sure what the scene is like yet, I plan on finding out soon enough.

Do you like Drum n Bass???

Alright mate!

I've been mixin for 4 years. The best advice I can give you is to buy either Technics or Vestax record decks- me personally Technics- they're raw- do what they do, what you see is what you get- you don't need the fancy frills that Vestax offer.

Mixers-always important, to start don't need your hi low and mid faders but eventually you will- so maybe worth the investment once again- vestax or technics.

Vinyl- best quality-real mixing. CD decks don't bother unless you get the Technics ones- others skip, Technics work as if you are mixing with a real record- you can scratch on 'em and it'll be clear as crystal!

Headphones important that's the brain of the music. If what you hear isn't quality, it won't be for anyone else. Need to hear your beats and your breaks to perfection- especially if you're startin- coz you'll only have to re-teach yourself when you do work with quality.

Hope what I'm sayin benefits ya
Good luck wit everythin- it's a wicked buzz to be on!!!! Enjoy!!

hey mate

to be honest for an okay set up check out adtrader.co.uk, loads of people selling technics decks, good mixers as a package, speakers and headphones you can potentially use basic ones if you can't wait that long.

Respect to you mate,

If you ever wnna chat bout anythin else,
gis a shout })
