Hey all, I'm new to these forums, but I've come across two brick walls in my production. If you can, it'd be greatly appreciated if you could help me figure how to get passed these things in cubase. Okay here goes.

1. While working, I found the need for a stuttery synth sound. I don't know if you necessarily know what I'm talking about, but It's a little rhythm of the sound coming on and off and it gives a nice electronic effect. I was wondering how to acheive this. I know, there's the obvious way of alterine the volume of the Midi/Audio track, but I was thinking of something different. This can be done in reason with the matrix pattern sequencer, but that has very limited possibilities and can only be done for a 16-step pattern, and I'm looking for more. Also, this can also be done in Fruity Loops, but I don't understand how it's done in that program, so my problem persists. Ideally, I was wondering if, for example, you could hold a sustained note on one midi track, and then setup another midi track only with the pattern, and then sidechain? the pattern track with the sound track so that the sound only comes on, or is triggered, based on the pattern midi track. I don't know how else to explain it, and this could be part of the problem, but I've checked around and it might have to do with sidechaining or something, but that's about as far as I got. If anyone knows how to do this, or another similar way, please let me know.

2. Also, I was wondering if there was any way to use Cubase more like fruityloops. Let me elaborate. Fruityloops is heavily pattern based, so if you make a change to the pattern, every time it plays, its the newly editted pattern. In cubase, this is no such option. If you want a pattern to repeat, you literally have to copy it. That's fine, however, if I end up wanted to change one note in that patter, is there any way that if i change one pattern, it will be applied for all the others? This isn't that big of a deal with changing the notes, but moreso for automation. If I have a phase or pan effect that's going on and I copy this one pattern a couple dozen times. After listening throught the song, I find that i need to change the automation for these effects. This involves having to change the automation in one pattern, and manually doing for all the other patterns/loops. Is there any way that it can apply automatically, sort of like what fruity loops does. Hell, even if this isn't an option, is it possible to select the number of times you want this pattern to be copied in one fell swoop, rather than clicking alt, then dragging, and so on and so forth? Please, let me know.

So these are the problems I face. If anyone knows how to solve these for Cubase, let me know. If it can't be done in cubase, can you let me know what program can do these things. If you need any more details, let me know. Thanks a lot in advance.

on the reason matrix you can adjust the resolution & steps, which gives you more variety than the plain 16.

the Novation V station can produce a gated style sound if you flick the arpeggiator on.
also there is a function on some synths, that is new to me, called a Trancegate. this too has a resolution setting for variety & can be found on monsters such as the reFX VANGUARD.

as for the pattern based seqencers havn't got a clue. sorry.

Hey marbar1989, as an avid Cubase user I think I can answer your questions.

1) There are plenty of synths like the afformentioned reFX Vanguard which has of the best built in gates to get that effect your after. There are also several VST plugs you can use. Steinberg itself has a plug-in called CHOPPER located in the OTHERS menu under Plug-ins that has a basinc syncable straight 4-8-16-32 gate. There is also a cool plugin called MIDIGATE. Here sia list of others I have used:

AraldFX StormGate1
Atom Splitter G8-R v1.01 VST
BetabugsAudio GetaBlitch Jr. (free)
Camel Audio CamelSpace
KlangLabs MicroGater (free)
mgAudio mgTriggerGate (free) and most like the Vanguards
NOVAkILL killerGATE+ (free)
Sonicbytes Gat'R

2) Because of Cubases linear design, the pattern element is really not a possibility the way you would like it to be, or that is implimented on others like Fruity Loops or Ableton. But you can rewire many programs like Reason and Ableton into Cubase so maybe a mixture of Cubase and something else might be in order.

Hope this helps....

HI ,

In answer to your second question, ctrl a to copy all, then cntrl d to duplicate. You can duplicate 100`s of patterns in seconds. Please note this will also copy over nay automation drawn for any parts.

thanks
