ESX24 is fine for trancy, techno grooves as it has the 808 and 909 samples, but, I find that Ultrabeat (Logic Plugins) delivers some phattt kiks, snares and hats, not forgetting reverse cymbal crashes... I don't know which version of Logic you use I'm afraid, so I don't know if you'll have it. If you don't, play around with the EQ, double-click on the EQ tab, just above the Inserts tabs, you can play around with the EQ for each individual track and get your desired tones...

I would have a look at Native Instruments Battery 2. This is one wicked bit of kit. Comes with tons of midi files too...

Hope this helps...

Not sure Ultrabeat's on there then dude, shame... Bring up the EQ for each individual track and play around with it until you get your desired sound... Works a treat...

Found this in one of Rendall's posts, very, very useful info...

Well, I've more been on the 4x4 kinda tip with garage. Putting good house beats together is tough and so is garage, maybe even harder. Again I dont think compression really works on the more musical side of garage. I think the trick is to get the sounds right with a simple loop. Try a sampled kick, and an analogue kick (808 or similar) together as one. The analogue kick gives it the lower end which is clean. A sampled kick you can compress a little to give it a punchy sound. Try and not let the analogue kick sustain for long. You want the kicks to merge into one. A deep yet short and puncy kick so you have a mixture of dynamics. You can of course try to add more to taste...! Ok, for a nice punchy classic snare. Try mixing a snare and a clap. Pitch down the clap a little until it too merges in with the snare. Add any dymamics as you wish. An Envelope will alow you control attack & delay, Experiment. Now to turn that into a garage sounding beat (rather than house), its whats going on in between the kick snare routine that give it that signiture sound. Sift through what snares, rim hits and percussion you have. Find a nice short sound. Placing that bravely yet cleverly out of time will rid the beat of the 'strict' timing that can make 4x4 music sometimes a little dull? Really its all up to you but this is a structure I use a lot when starting off. Slowly building a beat. Remember rhythm is important, something maybe not so obvious might give your beats a unique sound. Maybe record some vocal hits? Clicks, breaths? Anything like that will characterise your sound. Todd Edwards does this a treat, check any of his beats for examples. Im not too sure how well I explain things so feel free to message if you need to!

Hi Rendall, max respect to your previous posts... Tis a marvel when the wise share their knowledge...

My vibe is shakin at the moment... Had a rehearsal with the metal band tonight, some lads in the studio next-door were jammin with a MPC3000, and a very nice Access Indigo, invited them in for a bash... I'm glad to say the genre of music soon shifted to a full-on fuzz-wah, funky hard-house, mad bad-ar*e cacophony of punchiness... Definitely different, definitely palatable

thanks guys, im fine with building beats n i no all my frequencies n stuff its just like any ways of using certain fx i might not have thought about to tuffen up those kicks.
I made a track a couple of weeks ago using the `duckin` technique n based the track around that but as soon as i took my mids out i lost the punch of my kick from the compression, is there any way to get that same affect without havin to start duckin?

Yes there is. I find compression on individual kicks (as opposed to a kick track recording) just ends up muddy. Slow the attack down in the slightest and you've transient madness. The distortion method works a lot better on kicks. Roll of the low low bottom end and then add a distortion unit. In logic, the bitcrusher is ideal. Reducing the bitrate has a very similar effect to using compression; while compression add's 'phatness' but attenuating the volume, lowering the bitrate reduces the possible dynamic range. Try to avoid adding any obvious distortion like character, just beef it up. Folling that, you could add some slight compression to smoothen it out. Or an envelope could help you there.
