When it comes to dj's should you be honest and if they are crap then tell them? I remember a discussion i had ages ago with people about why people that download mixes are never honest and just say ok or good mix. Isnt it better to just be honest with the person and not give them false hopes

Yes, you should be honest IMO. I would find a more constructive way of telling them that they need improvement than that, though. Lord knows I did some shit mixing when I first started out. But then again, I still do a lot of shit mixing.

but then the old chestnut of , does good mixing make you a good dj ? personally i think it does but the scenarios are shit tunes but mixed well or really good tunes presented badly ? what do you want to hear ?
Grooverider and jack Frost have never been the best technical dj's if i'm honest but i've listened to them for years and in a club they kill it every time , it still works.
I think it's all about selection of tunes at the end of the day, but when the boom of dance/rave dj's came along in the 90's the only way you could break through was your technical abilty and trying to stand out from the other 800 dj's in your area wanting to break into the bigtime too,
