Hi all, just found this website and it looks great, some on the existing posts have already been helpful.
I've been DJing for at least 6 months now, and I've done about 4 small time gigs, mostly for mates and stuff. They have all seemed to go down pretty well. I use a MacBook with Traktor 3 and a BCD3000, amped with a Numark Dimension 4 and a pair of 700watt speakers. Thing is I have never touched vinyls or CD decks, so I feel like I'm missing out somewhat. I love the idea of DJing with vinyls, but getting the music on vinyl is so expensive! I don't want to have to go and re-buy all my CDs as vinyls! What do you guys think?
I have a couple of other questions questions too. So far my sets have gone OK, but I really wanna get the crowd jumping. What is the ideal length to play a track for? And do you have any other tips for me?
Another thing I'm a little confused on, is just how do you change the tempo of your mix? Like if you play a track thats 130, then you put another on thats 132, beatmatched to 130 so it blends, aren't you just stuck at 130 for the rest of the night in theory? Sorry thats probably a really dumb question but I'm still very new to this concept, and so far my mixes have been nothing special!
I'm just looking for someone to take me out of the noob zone, as of now I'm entirely self taught!
Cheers for any input guys! |

The way forward does seem to be CD's mate but i'm sticking to vinyl myself, it just looks and feels better in my opinion.
As for track length for me its a good 4,5 minutes but i'll never play a record to death definetly not...nothing worse that hearing a mix and then you just hear the beats of the out-going track and then mixing the new over the top.
As for tempo you can easily change the tempo without putting up the speed. For me with Trance theres a few styles in it that when all mixed together i can have a 3 track start,4 track build-up and then a good 3,4 track pounding all at the same speed.Dunno about other styles but with Trance its VERY easy to build tempo without uping the speed _________________ Back In Business! |

I would definitely invest in some vinyl decks mate, you will get a much clearer understanding of DJ'n plus its more fun than digital mixing. It is expensive but if you look at it as that vinyl may be worth something in a few years to come compared to a cd or mp3 if you ever want to sell it. I have a few vinyl worth over £30 from 2003/2004! The added value soon goes up!
As for track length all DJ's are different. I'm like Tigerland, i don't really like to hear the outro beats of a song. I like the bassline or vocal to be heard before the outro beats are played. I maybe would let the outro beats be heard in a big night club where everyone is dancing none stop. Then it gives the dancers a bit of a breather before the next tune if you get me....
Sometimes i think some of my House tunes sound better sped up a little so i will VERY slowly change the pitch on that tune, not by much. You don't want people to notice you've done it to be honest lol. Best thing to do is set your pitch inbetween the normal bpm and the fastest it will go so you won't have to change the speed.
Hope thats helped a little |

I usually let most of the song play. I will start bringing in the next song when there is 1:30 - 1:00 left in the current song, depending on what the song is like. I try to mix very tightly so that as soon as one song ends, the next one starts, and there's no boring time of the intro/outro. It does take work knowing your songs and listening ahead to see what will work best.
With the BPM thing, you can slowly get back to 132. I'd even say, bring the 130bpm tune up to 131, bring the 132 down to 131, then you're meeting in the middle, then once you've mixed into the 132 tune, bring that one back to regular speed! I try to keep the bpm fairly consistent, I don't like to go up and down, usually just build up to a point and try to keep everything close to that! |
