This is a very amateur question, but I'm a big fan of remixed tracks and I was wondering how they are made.

Is there a program/process that decompiles a track in some way, so that you can edit the individual components of that track? In other words it would give you the vocals and various beats as separate files to play with?

Is this even possible, or do you have to start with the original recording? Any help is greatly appreciated.

No you cannot break a track into seperate samples from the original finished track version. The only way to get the samples is from the producer himself or you happen to find the sample(s) online somewhere and download them yourself. If all you have is a full song finished, sorry. All you can do with that is cut and paste it making it an "edit" but not a remix.

There is a way you could do it in a round about way but the only tunes available tend to be old disco, middle of the road pop tunes. By getting hold of a midi file of a song (you can find them for free download around the net) and re assigning sounds to each track, you might even be lucky and find a usable accapella to go with it oh and you'll probably need a sequencer to host it all on if you haven't already got one.

another thing you could try is filtering certain sounds out one at a time until you get a number of different tracks, but I think that would sound crap to be honest

Like Anthony said if you want the track to remix properly you need to have some good friends in the studio where the track was recorded or you need to be friends with the producer.

ive heard you can do it by extreme parameter editing but at the end of the day its a waste of time because the finish product comes out shit. best bet is to browse around the net and look for sample

You can use a huge range of different filters, somtimes phase inversion works well.
It's a lot of trying!
Sometimes you can find a shor sequence and loop it
