Simple subject, upgrades... How come they cost so bloody much and are we being taken for a ride?
I've learned over the years that it's really important to keep software up-to-date, whether it be OS (Operating System), Sequencing or VSTs/Audio Units. One thing that is really starting p*ss me off is keeping up-to-date with Logic, it was never this expensive when Emagic were in control, don't get me wrong, I love Logic Pro 7 to bits (Garage Band should be outlawed though) but look back, Logic Platinum (£550) to Logic Pro 6 (£200) and then to Logic Pro 7 (another £200). In-effect, I've spent near £1k on software (Logic Pro 7) that costs £650 to buy, who's got my £350???? At this rate, I'll be going back to using my MPC2000 and S3000, borrowing sounds from people and all that. Nuff said...

Get it all off your chest here...

I personally don't use the software mentioned, but i can see what your saying. Having to pay for the latest upgraded version is a bummer. You would think that those who own previous versions would get discount or free upgrades, nope!! they choose to charge you a another £200. It's defo all about money to the big boys. What a joke!

this is outrageous to complain that Logic is charging to much for it's softwear upgrades. Let me ask you this;; Would you sell the softwear that you and your development team had been working on for like 2 - 4 years for free? no! I think not.

You have to take into consideration the money that people make from creating music using this softwear & the development time, and brains it's taken to create and develop. Worth paying for the £200 upgrade IMHO

Toby, I've been the proud and loyal owner of various versions (2.5 onwards) of Logic since the late eighties. The point I was trying to get across, and fair enough, this wasn't mentioned in the original post was how much the upgrade costs have risen since Apple took over Logic from Emagic. I have no qualms whatsoever about paying for upgrades, just not quite as much as Apple have been charging in the last year or so (compared to what Emagic used to charge).

No I wouldn't give away software upgrades that I'd spent the last year developing, but, I certainly wouldn't charge £400 in one year for them being as Logic Audio Platinum (flagship) originally sold for £550. Now, lets do some simple arithmatic here... £550 for Logic Platinum 5 (Emagic) + £200 for the Logic Pro 6 Upgrade (Apple) + £200 for the Logic Pro 7 Upgrade (Apple) = £950. Logic Pro 7 can be purchased for £699 and I've in-effect spent £950 on software that retails at £699 which is a difference of £251 by my reckoning... I would have expected to pay £149 to upgrade to Pro 7, which I would have no problems forking out, but, I've spent £400, instead of £149, what would you as a consumer prefer to pay? Anyway, for your information, Emagic have put most of the development into Logic over the last 15-20 years. Apple have bought Logic and added a few extras, Emagic developed most of the VST and effect plugins for Logic Audio Platinum.

Unfortunately the music industry is nowhere near as lucrative as it used to be, prime example, look how many records you've got to sell to get a number one now compared to that of 5 years ago. In the advertising industry, most people will only pay minimum spondoolies for composed music and I mean minimuim as most advertisers can now copy/paste pre-composed samples in Garage Band and have no royalties/license fees to pay.
The minority of people that use Logic do earn a hideous amount of money (most of the highest earners use ProTools), but, I think you'll find the majority of people that use Logic are having problems giving their music away let alone selling it (well, I am, maybe I'm just s*yte). Yes, in your point above, it would have been worth paying £200 for the upgrade, but not £400...

I hope you get my point now. Sorry to ramble on...

Apple- I humbly apologise... The latest Logic Pro upgrade (7.01-7.1) costs £13.99

Just got to find £140 for the Tiger family pack now...

That's more like it... Thinking deeply about it, there'll be 7.2, 7.3 etc, all the way up to 8. I'll be rich by then, or so I keep telling the wife!!!

A sore subject no doubt. Still, I do think your wrong in some aspects. You don't HAVE to uprgade constantly. I used 5.2 for a good few years and throught the time that 6 was rocking on. I decided to switch to Mac and forked out a load for that, and Pro 7 of course. None the less, 7.01 is released and they are charging for that! Of course it's only £10 roughly. Then Tiger..... Well I'm still with the standard OS and just ver 7 and I'm doing fine. I've not been compelled to upgrade yet, I see no need. Fair enough, when version 8 comes, i'll be itching.... But I don't see it as important as just getting down to music. And what you said about getting the old Akai out, you'd be surpise how inspiring that is man!

Too true!!! I jumped from 2.5, which I had for 10 years before upgrading to Platinum...

At the end of the day, it is what you produce, not what you produce it with... I just had a major whinge-on that day, after forking out all that dosh... Confused

The MPC and S3000 still get a lot of use...
