In case anyone here is a Drum and Bass fan.
Aphrodite
“Overdriveâ€
Feed Records
Release Date: August 23rd, 2005
Aphrodite’s latest mix is a collage of remixes and original tracks from the man himself, as well as an eclectic assortment of tunes from the heavy hitters of the drum and bass world. Featured collaborations include the likes of legendary producers Afrika Bambaata, and Mickey Finn, as well as remixes by Benny Page, Phantasy and Shoden, Special K, and Raw Dub. The Urban Takeover and Aphrodite Recordings front man not only seamlessly weaves top remixes of tracks by the also legendary Steve Hyper (track 5 – “Can’t Stopâ€) and NG3 (track 21 – “Hollerâ€), but also drops a beautiful collaboration between songstress Beverly Night and himself (track 12 – “Sometimesâ€).
As I listened, many of the tracks that began my journey into jungle and drum and bass came to mind. The signature style and beat patterns that made Aphrodite a household name still ring through his tracks, even as he has molded his unique sound to stay current with the direction of dnb throughout the years.
The compilation begins hard and heavy, yet very methodically takes the listener on auditory journey of diverse tracks. An eccentric amalgamation of rude-boy ragga anthems, techie roughneck, mid-eastern and western vocals, Aphrodite’s mix is diverse and extremely melodic. Whether your preference is vocals, jump-up, or hard step, this mix has something for everyone.
Choice tracks from the mix:
Track 3 – “Stalker (Benny Page remix)†Aphrodite – The first taste in the mix that slaps you in the face and says ‘this is an Aphrodite mix, bitch.†If you don’t pump to this, you’re dead.
Track 5 – “Can’t Stop (Aphrodite Remix)†Steve Hyper – Solid ragga jam with brilliant, complicated lyrics spit with true fire by a master of the art.
Track 12 – “Sometimes†Aphrodite and Beverly Knight – Fantastic female vocal track reminiscent of Cleveland Lounge’s immensely popular hit ‘Drowning’, or Kosheen’s ‘Hide You’, especially in its potential for cross over to a larger audience than the tried ands true DNB crews.
Track 17 – “Soul Makossa (Aphrodite Remix)†Afrika Bambaata – One of the most unique songs in the mix, with a regal horn loop and a whooping bass line. Best description for this track is just damn fun to rock at high volume on the highway.
