At some stage in your music production years (as long as your keen) you will need to start recording. Whether it be live instrumentation or just vocals. Personally, until now I've had to put up with a Shure SM58 for recording. Don't get me wrong, this is an all mighty king of mic's, but it's devoted to live use.

So here's the facts;

There are two main types of microphone. Dynamic & Condenser. I'll save you the boring lecture but in general, Dynamic is live use and Condenser's are in the studio. Condenser microphones have a larger diaphram (what picks up sound waves) and capture vocals and instrument's with much more detail. The other main difference is that I think all Condenser mic's requrie 'Phantom Power'. This is either a battery or direct power from a mixing console/desk. This is also why I stated on my post relating to this (Monitors) why it is good to invest in a good desk.

A brilliant Condenser that is widely used in studio's throughout is the Rode NT2. It is has acutally now been redesigned and is called the NT2000. The microphone remains much the same but it has three controlable variables on the front panel.

1- Polar Pattern (The area in which the mic is set to respond)
2- High Pass Filter (To roll of un-wanted bass)
3- Pad (To above a certain dB)

As they say it; "This is simply one of the best sounding studio microphones on the world market today, regardless of price"

This mic retails at about £299 which is nothing when you think of Neuman mic's that can sell over £3000. But yet again, that's another story.

I read an artlcle in Sound on Sound magazine some time back, 1999 I think it was, saying the Rode NT2 was used to record the vocals on the whole of Craig's first solo album "Born To Do It"

Also, Artful Dodger at the time where Mark Hill and Pete Devereux: used the Rode NT2 on rewind and Artful Dodger's third hit Woman Trouble.

Yup thats right. One of the many artists that have used that mic. Just cruise MTV for a while and you'll spot it somewhere. We have just got around to ordering one of these (NT2000). You checked out the new & improved NT2000?
