personally: nothing beats the sound of a vinyl!!!.... UNLESS your at the studio
and i think it takes skill to play on vinyl rather than cds - i dont know about other countries but here in australia alot of djs these days dont even know how to read a vinyl. if they had a few vinyls to play with watch there timing go out the window! see with cdj's you have a bpm counter to beat match with and a remain time setting to know when to mix out. with vinyl your just looking at the vinyl and using your trained ear to beat match. personally i think cds have had a massive impact on all music genre's... notice more people want to become djs cause they see how easy it is to mix with cds?... like i dont mind young or new talent stepping up into the industry but you see they dont have to search and save for music like we (or whoever is from the old golden days) did. vinyls didnt come free! and they aren't lite either!
i find it very unfair for the producers that lose thousands of $$$ a year due to people downloading there music and not supporting the producer by going out to the records store to purchase the vinyl nor make the effort and goto 3beat digital to pay like $3 for a song. its rediculous! producers, record labels and record stores are closing because of this. to me - you only have the passion for the music if you support the producer =)
but then again i see it from everyone elses point of view that it is easy and more convinient to download music of applications such as limewire, soulseek etc.
even though i still think its wrong. which is why the music piracy groups need to do something about it before there are no good producers left! _________________ old skool - its the only way! |

Totaly agree mate and me personaly its being more of a dj using vinyl but dont say that out loud cuz the CD dj's will be down your neck telling you different.Cd mixing is easier i dont care what anyone says, it is! Vinyl is harder and takes more skill _________________ Back In Business! |

CD mixing has its good and bad bits…… not to speak too soon but i think i'm one of just a few people here who do just as much CD mixing aswel as vinyl mixing… theres no life to mixing with CD's but it some ways you can still bring life to it by messing around with all the lil buttons n crap they got on it
i wouldnt go all out to cd tho _________________ "Yeh, I'm a club head. What of it? I dance Better then you. Your a punk! You bounce your head up and down, I move my feet around. I feel the rhythem; You feel the scream. The Difference between you and me:

Yo pals,
Its just about new innovations in technology. Just like we advanced from chord phones to cell phones, classic cars to high speed cars, postal services to e-mails, etc., similarly music world has also made a transition from analog to digital.
Though the older models are the subject of attraction they look cool 'now' coz they are antique pieces, but they lack those features which the newer versions have!
Without this advancement we wud neither have had internet nor this forum on which we are discussing this topic!
From music point of view,
If I was a dj and needed to do JUST MIXING, I wud certainly prefer CDs over Vinyls.
Simple reason being, there is no point in racking our brains in making a simple cueing-n-beat matching procedure more complicated by pulling the record back again and again at the start of the beat, and checking if its perfectly beat matched or not.... I think this aint the parameter to test a DJ's skill.
I've seen concerts of top djs like Tiesto, who do just beat matching using the world's finest decks Technics. This can as well be done on a CD player and that too in a better way as they have 'effects' which are not there on decks.
BUT............ !!!!!
The REAL SKILL of a dj lies in performing tricks with tunes like scratching, beat juggling, (turntablism we can say). And for this, I'd DEFINATELY go for vinyls turntables and not CD turntables.
Coz even the finest CD turntables like Pioneer CDJ 1000 MK2/MK3, cannot do all those things which are possible with Vinyl Decks.
So at the end I'd say that the use of the equipment (decks or CD players) or the storage device(vinyls or CDs) depends upon our purpose...
1. Plain Mixing
or
2. Scratching (Turntablism to be more precise)
Thanx.... _________________ REgards,

i agree with ya dj reverb but to a certain extent
todays generation evolving from vinyl to cd is normal like who didnt see it coming but everytime i see one of these threads i automatically think about all the djs not purchasing there music anymore and just downloading mp3's off the internet which puts producers in a tuff position to keep producing at there professional levels without even making a dollar or stop completely due to loss of funds
hopefully that makes sense lol
cds are cool to use but choosing cds over vinyls is just lazy! down right un australian and if the anzacs were around today they'd b f**'in spewing! _________________ old skool - its the only way! |

Personally I like Vinyl. I like analog. Whatever.
The CD mixers have neat features and bells and whistles and whatever which I think.. would be cool to use as an extra spice to the relentless geardriven groove off two vinyl records, but to solidify your entire experiance to mixing solely on digital mediums seems void and empty.
Point and click mixing two of the 3 million songs you downloaded for free isn't being a Dj.
There just something about watching someone franticly tear through a create of records to track down that one perfect next track.
Not to mention all the muscles you build from lugging them around. _________________ Music:
