learn how to count beats then match each record by increasing or decreasing the pitch. At first it might seem tough to figure which record is ahead but you will get it down with practice. _________________ I AM SELLING A FINAL SCRATCH 2 WITH 6 VINYL RECORDS WITH A ADAPTEC FIRE WIRE CARD ON EBAY. | What you want to do is take the best of all sources 2 - 3 - 4!! etc. and provide what each one is lacking. OK wait that sounds strange. when your rinsing it out propa try to take say a real clean kick drum on record one while turning it's not to clean high hat way down while , turning the nice crisp hats on the other record up to compensate. Turn the muddy poor produced bass from one track down while bringing the phat sub-base up on the other. etc. If your playing two great tracks than go back and forth and get creative. But I feel that there is almost always a better sounding instrument on one of the tracks than the other, even on some of the best produced stuff I've head lately. |

Pick random records, or ask a friend to select froma pile they don't know, that way you'll learn which records will not work well together, and which are out of key, which tempos won't fit etc. If you can get two electro records into time with each other, then start to make up 'specials - where you know what two you want together; my favourites are 'dark side of the moon' (pink floyd) track 2, it's a nice electro tune, combined with 'valley of the shadows' (ram records); or the "honey-bunny/pumpkin/robbery" record from pulp-fiction soundtrack combined with d&b, talib kweli/hi-tek instrumentals go very nicely with mocal hip-hop, they have very strong instrumentals, so you can create really nice mixes.
Find instrumentals of vocal hip hop/etc and combine them with the same records with vocals, if you can blend a tune with it's instrumental and make sound good, so that a listener isn't bored or doesn't notice, then you're on the right track - if you want to learn to get the record into time with another, then practice with two of the same record, set the pitch to zero, try to 'cue' the second so it comes at the beginning of a 'phrase' (usually in 16/32/64/128 bar blocks), then, in order to practice, change the pitch on the second, and then try to get it back into time - zero is usually the hardest area to work around, so if you can manage to 'find' the two records in time you'll understand what to do with different records - avoid touching the record/platter when blending, it will ruin records, and the worst part is that you might not notice when an audience will.
If you want to 'blend', try using vocal records with non-vocals, or music with guitars/sax/melodies etx with beats - you'll probably find out what to play with what with time. Using hi hat introductions or playing long intros without beats is good over sparse beat oriented music, and it will allow you to slowly mix two together 'seamlessly'.
The best tip I can think of is to keep away from your favourite records, leave them for special occasions. |

practice, practice, practice. listen to other dj's mixes (z-trip especially) as a guideline for what to focus on. the most effective (or wow! effect) comes from mashing genres (i.e. a hip hop vocal over a classic rock track). stock up on singles with instrumentals & acapellas. & practice, practice, practice.... _________________ homebase of sly
