Hi folks,
Looking at software for home (but professional) use but can't decide between Logic Pro 7 and Cubase SX3 or 4
What's the general concensus??
also would you buy Logic Express or the full blown Logic Pro or for that matter Cubase Studio or 4?
I always used Cubase back in the band but only cos it was the only programme!
Appreciate the help before I blow £700 quid on rubbish software
I'm Mac based by the way |

Well I would choose Cubase SX3, but that's only becuase I've got loads of VST(i) plugins like z3ta, Vanguard, FM7, Pro-53, Hydra and many others, and they only work with Steinberg. Also Cubase got a very nice arranging playlist. But it's up to you to decide ofcourse ;) _________________

As mentioned in another thread. You'd have to pay me to switch from Cubase SX3.
I looked into Cubase 4, but it doesn't support DX and I have a load of DX plugins that I still use.

Hi Guys.
I Use Logic, Pro Tools and I'm starting to use Cubase now.
They all have their pros and cons.
Logic is great for midi but has a bit of a problem with its internal mixing.I've made a test with the same song on both Logic and Pro Tools.Same tracks, same volume setting and no plug ins.Pro Tools sounded clearer than Logic.Apparently the summing is different(32bit, 48bit floating what????).I know that I find it easier to mix in Pro Tools than Logic.
I don't know much of Cubase right now but it feels like home to me.
My new setup will be Cubase on Windows and Pro Tools on OSX.
BTW I'm still waiting for Logic to work DAE on Mac Pro with PTHD PCIe.
Cheers |

| I have used Cubase since 1987. While there are obvious pro's and con's with any DAW, Pro Tools has less then adequate MIDI implimentation and Logic does not have regional audio editing (the ability to apply processing to any section of audio anywhere without copying to a new track or adding automation) which for me is a simple must have. Let's say you have an audio track of your vocals, you could in Cubase, go to any section and select a word or verse, and add reverb and deley to just that part [non-destructively as well] without inserting any effects or moving to another track. You can reverse a single word, whatever processors you have, as simply as select and click. |

I've been using logic since Micrologic years ago ... i am using now Logic Pro 7 on a G5 Quad ... I wouldnt say its the best software on the market but i'd rather say that its fits my needs and i work pretty much fast on it ...
I would suggest you maybe not to base your decision on what i could say about Logic or what somebody else could say about Cubase or Protools ... Ask yourself what it is is the best for you personally ... This being said, you have a Mac, so you might want to go with Logic or Protools ...
Why don't you get the demo for both software, it might help you a lot to decide which one suit the most the way you produce music ....
Cheers !!!

Ah, the age old debate!!
I'm loving Logic 7, although Cubase still has the best time stretch/Pitch Shift algorythms.
Logic FTW!!!
P.s. it's mainly because I love working on Macs... _________________ "nice one chaps! shiver me timbers!" - Mr Scruff

If you're a Mac user I wouldnt even bother with Cubase. Logic pro has all the synths u need and is really cheap now (I've upgraded to Logic 8). Also it is optimised for OS X with core MIDI/Audio. Btw the bugs and problems of Logic 7 crashing sometimes I think have been fixed. I've been using Logic 8 for a little over a week now and it hasnt crashed once.
I have used Cubase but only SX 2 so I'm guessing it's a lot better now. Whatever the new features are though ur still not getting the mass of plugins and VI's ur getting with Logic.
I do agree though, Pro Tools is better for mixing and that is the only flaw of Logic in my opinion.
When u consider price and what you're getting, I'd say Logic is the way to go. The only thing I didnt like about Logic at first was learning how to use it but that didn't take long. _________________ -Matt Reverie-

it depends what your used to working on if any at all
i use cubase, have done for a while now .. gonna upgrade to cubase 4 soon .. logic is completely alien to me .. but then again ive never really used it!!
but its safe to say that either will be good choices.. i guess its just down to personal preferance! |

All about personal preference really. I think once you get deep enough into a quality sequencer, it is all you need really. I personally use Cubase and wouldnt mind trying Logic one day seeing as it is now possible to run on a PC with newer computers. I have breifly used Logic 8 before, but got frustrated when it wouldn't do something I was used to. It's hard to get out of a certain way of working, but sometimes it is worth pushing yourself into new territory.
Has anyone ever used a Traker before? That is something which takes sequencers to a completely different level, but they look so complicated to use. Good for glitching and looping things up. _________________
