|

KOREA AND CHINA STORM MP3 MARKET
IT'S not just happening to mobile phones. The MP3 player market is also witnessing an onslaught from South Korean and Chinese manufacturers.
By next month, consumers will have models from Chinese brand aigo and Korea-based iRiver to choose from.
The aigo (Mandarin for 'love of country' or 'patriot') P200 is a flash memory player available with capacities of 128MB, 256MB or 512MB. Its selling point is a full 65,000 colour TFT LCD screen. So digital photos can be stored on the device and it can double as a portable photo album.
There's also an e-book function, allowing e-mail or Word documents to be converted to .txt files and stored in the device to be called up when needed.
If you're tired of reading, the text-to-speech function can recite the document back to you. It stores up to 15 hours of conversation, and has an FM radio too.
Prices range from $449 (128MB) to $699 (512MB).
Korean manufacturer iRiver is the second best-selling brand in the United States, with a 17 per cent share of the market, behind only Apple's iPod which has 24 per cent. It is set to unleash its line of MP3 players here, with models based on both flash memory and hard-disk storage mediums.
One of them, the H120 with a 20GB hard drive, costs $699. It can play songs for five hours, has an FM tuner and a high resolution display. It can also record voice, and has smart software to make music sound better. There's USB 2.0 support, and it's all squeezed into a sleek metal box.
One of the flash players, which are small enough to tote to the gym but sophisticated enough to support more than 39 languages, even comes with a digital camera. Prices are yet to be confirmed for most of the products, but they're expected to hit the shops next month.
MOBILE PHONE OR FASHION ITEM?
TIRED of your mobile phone looking like, well, a mobile phone? Here's a revolutionary new design from Korean manufacturer GEO. It looks more like a make-up compact and has a glossy glass-like finish on the front.
The GV880 can fit into the palm of your hand, measures 5cm on each side and is about 2cm thick. Add a 300,000-pixel camera with four times digital zoom and video recording, and you have a pretty nifty multimedia gadget.
The front of the phone has a new-age Oled (organic light-emitting diode) display with 256 colours, and there's a 65,000 colour TFT LCD screen inside. There are polyphonic ringtones, and 4.5MB worth of memory for all those pictures and videos.
However, the navigation takes some getting used to.
It retails at $768 without a plan and comes in black, lavender and white.
