Hello,
I have been djing for a few years now but have recently got into producing Funky House tracks using Reason.
However I am having major problems getting the right sounds and effects through the internet and sample CDs. The major problems are getting the particular bass sounds that you hear with pro productions like Ian Carey Soul Avengerz tracks. The samples I am getting hold of are wav files, meaning I am very restricted in what note I can use as reason adjusts the tempo of the sample. The bass samples within reason are too instrumental sounding and I have endevoured to filter etc but nothing seems to work. Frustrating!
Do I need more hardware or software to make it work? Where can I obtain professional sounding samples with which I can manipulate the note without affecting the tempo?
I would be much appreciated for some info as I have some tracks laid down but just need the right bass', guitars and piano to make it all work.

It sounds as though you are using only the DrRex or the NN19 to play your bass samples.
When you use a bass synthesizer, it is easier to find the sound that you are looking for.
If you have reason 2.5 I sugest you load a Subtractor into your rack and play around with the bass presets, located in the reason factory soundbank. The Subtractor has many ways of changing the sound that goes though it.
If you are using Reason 3.0, load up a Combinator and play with the bass presets in that.
You will find that the Reason sound banks, cater for almost all genres, but to get the sound that you need, I sugest that you keep on playing with the different knobs and buttons on the instuments. The sound you want is there, in most cases you will stumble upon it by mistake.
It has to be said that without any 'fx', the bass in Reason is a little lack lustre, try placing a PEQ2 in line from your sampler/synth to your mixer have a play with the settings and you can get some amazing 'phat' bass. If you need the bass to be a bit more punchy, try placing a compressor in line.
I hope this helps.

| Yeh got some really cool sounds out of the subtractor just using the factory bass samples. Good twisted electro bass sounds that I'm enjoying producing! Suppose it's just a case of trial and error until you get what you want |
