Personaly i hate djs that just mix 2 songs and thats it,for me there's nothing worse that songs just being mixed for the sake of it and that happens in most dj mixes. For me when i mix... about 99% of the mixing inbetween each song has to sound seemless.

Good point there TL. Sometimes i like to surprise the audience by maybe putting some of the next tune in the tune thats playing (a vocal for example). This lets the audience get excited for what is about to come in. I don't like DJ's who play at the same key all the way through without changing anything. To me you can't get noticed enough for doing that. But thats just my opinion. It does sound good to some people.

In answer to your question i think it is better to change the key of the tunes your playing every so often to liven up the mix. Don't be scared to do it. It will sound good and will get you noticed A LOT more Spot on

Alot of people these days are using that "Mixed In Key" program. Sure its nice and all but I dont see a real use for it myself. Listening to songs and DJing, you can tell what goes with what and what sounds good with whatever. Its a definite plus to mix "in key" but at the same time, mixing it up some wont hurt your DJ set. The only time people will hate on you, for the most part, is if you trainwreck or mix vocals over vocals. Both are bad. Know what you are playing. Know your music. Keys and mixing should come as second nature after a few years.

lol to be honest im only 50% sure in what harmonic mixing is. I more or less guessed that its the "bassline warp" in speed garage for example or the electro bass in electro. Thats all i can think it is anyway Confused but yea do post back on this TL, not sure i made sense to be honest lol

Depends on the genre, but for the most part you can still get some great sounding mixes without being too worried about keys.

Does that actually work though the key changing thing. Someone I know does mixes in Ableton and I hate them coz they end up sounding grainy coz its affecting the keys without changing the speed or vice versa. I can always tell when its activated.

I read about a program once in a music mag which analyses all of your music and matches up the closest ones harmonically. I havent used it yet, but it does sound interesting. Forgotten what the program is called though. When Isay matches up, i think it just refers to the music that links, doesn't actually alter anything.

I have been using mixed in keys for the last 6 month or so, It scans your tracks and puts them into a harmonic category, If you stick to the rules of mixed in key you can move out from one track into 3 other key ranges or of course stick to the range you are already in, there are in total 24 possible ranges to work around.
The only issue with this is tracks have different bpm's so pitching up or down to create a mix will then of course change the key range again, so to truly harmonic mix you need the facility to key lock each track.
I never key lock as I feel this adds a little variation to my style of mixing, i.e. if it sounds harmonically perfect every time it makes you lazy, throw in the track and let it ride “where is the fun in that” I like to work to make it right, if something clashes cut the EQ to make it fit ect ect.
There are so many things you do to make a mix, Mixed in key is just another tool to add another something to your style, but used in variation along with everything else.
For me Mixed in key has turned into a way of cataloguing my tracks, as I find it hard getting familiar with new tracks until I’ve played them a few time, this might sound strange but a digital file is not like having a new record where you physically have something to hold with a label on it in order to know what it is.

If you fancy hearing me I play on majicworldradio every sat 6-8pm goto the majicworldradio website to tune in.
