(i'm new to the culture, maybe i need some time/guidance) but gotta say that trying to market yourself/your music online can be a pain sometimes. seems like in the avenues i can choose (myspace, forums like these), there are many more that are trying to accomplish the same! and i love this forum community, but sometimes i feel like a drop in the music ocean doh im thinking of trying something new... like joining one of those DJ community sites that lets you post your mixes and network with other DJs/enthusiasts. Anybody out there doing this already? or hopefully someone feels the same way as me? I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on this

I believe that dj communities are very boring, you better stick with the forums.

One thing you'll learn very quickly is your not alone and the hill is VERY steep to climb. Sadly as original and as great as you can be it helps to know people that can help you along the way. Now you can kiss ass and go with the flow or you can do it your own way and maybe they will come to you. In time though trying to be noticed and the next big thing will drain you and you will get disheartened but you just gotta keep handing those mix cd's out and putting up mixes on forums Spot on

If your good and are happy with your product then youv done your job and then its all about luck

Thats twice in a week you've said something sensible - carefull.

Bottom line is everbody wants to be a dj, everybody wants to be an mc - as De La Soul once said.

the way I started out was renting a place out and expecting a small crowd the first few times and as word spread, I would upgrade to a bigger venue and keep going from there. now if I had a chance to dj at international clubs, I would but for now Im just sticking to my own events and what not for now. but another good way is like what tigerland said, just keep handing out mix tapes and wait for luck to hit ya and slap ya across your face ;) lol

well ya know things dont happen over night. It takes quite a while to actually start bringing in a crowd. like the first night I had around 30 people and the next time it was around 35 - 45 people so yea, it does take a lil time for the word to spread and people to actually come to the event and check you out and see what all the buzz is about. I'd say my crowds would be around 400 people but now with me in a new location unless some how people heard of me in Ottawa, I will need to restart my rep again.

It can be frustrating yeah. You have to put a lot of effort in and be in it for the right reasons if you wanna get anywhere. I feel that the internet is a must these days and can be very useful for building contacts. I spend a lot of time on the production side which can help to get your name about that way too. For me I have a Myspace page but I spent a lot of time building up my own promotional website to help other dj's, producers and labels. We have been going for over three years and are doing pretty well now with sponsors from ppl like Sony and Loop Masters. This for me has really helped me stay focused and motivated on marketing myself, but its a LOT of work believe me, plus I do a lot of Gfx work and have a coder involved so it all works. That is essentially though one of my key avenues to network with other dj's producers and labels.

Being part of sites like this can help, its just finding the right ones really.
