Forgive me if this is a stupid question!
I create dance music in fruityloops: bassline, synth lines, kick drms, hats, percussion loops. Just samples/loops vst plugins and fx.
Do I really need monitors to create a final master? Aren't headphones good enough?
I've never actually used monitors so assuming I go out and buy an expensive set, would I really notice that much difference between the monitors and my headphones?
Is it only audio-techie-geek people who can spot the difference?
I'm wondering, if I buy monitors would I discover that everything i've done so far sounds terrible (levels all wrong etc) but would this necessarily be the case? |

Depends how serious about music you are...
The only headphones that you can truly "monitor" on are the Sony MDR-7506. They were around £200, but you can buy them from ProAudioKit for £80. But if you want true sound, you need monitors. As you know price can be from £30 for a cheap pair of Rolands to £10,000 for wall mounted Genelecs.
Names like Mackie are good to go for...I'm buying a pair for Mackie HR624s today, as they (and their big brother the 824) are the sweetest sounding speakers around. I did some tests at turnkey and comparing them to all that was around (StudioSpares' SN10s, Tannoy Reveal 6D, and Genelecs smaller monitors and a few others)and the mackies were not only suggested as being the best around, they sell like hot cakes, so they must be doing something right...
Like I said, it really depends on how serious you are about music...
Take it easy,

1. No, headphones wont give you an accurate representation of how your tracks will sound on home systems, car stereos, etc. This is especially true if you are using high-end headphones.
2. Go pick up a pair of Alesis MK1's or some KRK's if you can afford them, you will definetly notice a difference.
3. Most likely you will hear a lot of different things, "terrible" is pretty subjective. |

| We had a pair of KRKs at the studio and like the NS10's are notoriously hi-endy and bright... |
