After the Oz fiasco and having to wear that s**t t-shirt with the beat the bass the boom the bang on the front of it? (cheers boys) we then moved onto Barristers in 95, I remember going into the club for the first time and thinking what the f**k is this place man, I’m about 5 foot 7 or 8 and my head was nearly touching the ceiling and it stank, dead musty it was mingin (that was from all the sweat dripping off the ceiling mmmm nice), the bogs were flooded and the place was black, the walls, ceiling the bogs were black too I think, I thought I was in a mosh pit man and def leopard were gonna be on with us later followed by ACDC haha. I remember looking round the club and thinking why are there pool tables in here? What the f**k is this place hahaha , it was not the best club I’d played at but it was a venue to keep the fever thing going, it was always gonna be difficult persuading people to swap a massive club on Blackpool prom holding a 1000 people to come down the M55 to the twilight zone every week.
Anyway we made the best of it and to be fair the staff at barristers made the club presentable when it opened and we got a decent amount of people turning up too for the first couple of months, the SS, Leigh posse and the usual suspects were still present and we recruited a little Preston and Leyland following too.
The sound system was ok and the mc stage was funny, a stage in a club for dwarfs?
We carried on with the Italian dance vibe for that couple of months and even awarded a raver of the year award to Gerry (R.I.P) on the anniversary of our 1st year and we also held a foam party where everyone’s clothes got bleached by the foam machine haha it was ok for a while but nothing compared to the old lady if I’m totally honest.
We were finding the numbers were dwindling after a couple of months around the time Chris Baker joined us briefly and the Dreamstate feelings of playing the harder side of things were stirring in Baz Ric and myself again which I think people who got there early doors can vouch for as we were dropping Jungle like The licence by krome and time and a few bits by special k, probably means nothing to a lot of people but they were heavy tunes back in the day. So after a while we were feeling the hardcore vibes through the Helter Skelter, Hysteria tape packs and slowly started to introduce this to the crowd through our sets totally erasing the Italian sound from the night. The numbers were keeping steady now and there were a lot of new faces to be seen in the club which was refreshing as we had completely changed the music policy to full on happy hardcore/techno by this point. This was when we started to bring in the big name dj’s that were doing the biznizz around the country in 95/96. Over the coming months were all working along side Brisk,Hixxy,Slipmatt,Seduction,Dougal etc week in week out which was fantastic as we were all bang up to date tunes wise as these guys were supplying us with whites and dubs every time they came up and played. I’m not sure if anyone realised that Barristers was one of the most upfront weekly hardcore events in the uk at the time running a close second to Kinetic and Vibalite? We were the first event to break Hixxy in the North West too; he is a sound lad whom I’m still friends with now 10 years down the line, good story about Hixxy was the first night he played he came back to Reg’s house with us all and went back2back with me playing Jungle, f**kin hell that lad can mix and his scratching was first class haha the bass was a little too loud for the neighbours at 4am and Reg ended up getting a dig from them hahaha no harm done in the end though.
Brisk is a good lad too whom I’m still friends with, he is probably along with Seduction the most controlled DJ I’ve every seen, if there’s anybody you would want to learn from it would be one of them guys, technically there complete.
So the night was going well and we were getting accepted into the main scene, we were being described as the new Ratpack by the DJ’s and United Dance were interested in doing a night with us, we thought this is it, were gonna make it to the big time.
The United Dance event went off at the palace with Vibes,Sy,Brisk,Seduction,Dougal and the one Mickey Pussyclart Finn all present and correct, after missing out 18 month earlier it was great to finally work with Mickey (thanks Baz), Barry had a bit of an argument with Seduction over which D+B DJ we were gonna have on, Baz said Mickey and Sedders wanted Hype haha luckily we got our own way as there would have been murders within Fever at the time if it had not been Mickey. The night was a success and Barry and Ric had enquiry’s from Murray @ Helter Skelter to hold the next event with us (we were that close man!) but due to an unfortunate event of some one dying on the night which caused some bad publicity for the rave scene in the north west they pulled the plug on the idea. To add to our woe’s some s**t underhand dealings had gone on (which I’m not going into details about) were a gwarn at Barristers and we lost that night too and that was the end of the hardcore for us, Devo’d again!
So close yet so far for the fever crew once again eh?
And then came the meley of the Cooler next ………….? _________________ MANCHESTER DRUM AND BASS SOULJAH !
