8th Mar Krust speaks ahead of Tranz-mission '07
I spoke with Full Cycle badman Krust ahead of his not-to-be-missed back-to-back with DJ Die at Tranz-mission on April 7th at Alexandra Palace - in the gargantuan, 5000-capacity One Nation arena. Read on for news about his new band project, his history in the world of pop, and more...
I’ve heard that you first got into the world of DJing and promoting by putting on parties in a scout hut. Care to elaborate?
Me and by brother first started DJing at school. The school gave us a room to use so we sprayed the walls and had parties in there. A few years later we started hanging out in a squat; it was the only place we could play music loud all the time. At the end of the garden was this big scout hut. We broke in (with a sledge hammer through a wall) and cleaned it up - fill the holes in the roof and so on. Then we started to hold parties. It was cool - we even had the old bill come in one time have a look around then told us to keep the music down then left.
We ran that spot for two years then we got closed down, but we made a name for our self. We even shot our first video there for wishing on a star by Fresh Four.
You tasted brief chart success back in 1989 as part of Fresh Four with the Top 10 hit ‘Wishing On A Star’. Although this didn’t immediately flourish into a musical career for you, did it give you the drive to succeed in the business?
I think the success of Fresh Four opened up my eyes to the world of the studio. I got the bug, I loved the environment, the equipment. After the entire fresh four thing died down I went to my brother. He had a sampler - a Casio FZ1. He showed me the basics, then I sat in his back room for 2 years learning how to use it inside out. After that there was no going back.
Another thing the experience showed me was the business side. It was a big eye opener a real harsh lesson in business 0.1. I learned a lot about it fast - stuff that has helped me get through the spiders web of today’s business.
Your classic ‘Warhead’ isn’t a track that I would say is easy to remix – given that it’s already pretty extreme. Were your pleased with TC’s update?
I think you’re right - it was not an easy tune to remix, but I think TC did a pretty good job. Remixes are a funny thing. They’re hit and miss for the best part. But I think we got a good one.
Which MCs do you feel best compliment your music? Do you feel certain flows work better over your sets?
I like Dyna, GQ, SP…I am working with a new guy from my band called Nik Toots and it’s working out. For me I like the MCs who talk about some thing interesting. I think you have an opportunity to give the people some thing. They want to here what you got to say. So use it.
What’s planned for the Full Cycle crew for the rest of the year? It seems that you guys are always up to big things.....
Right now I am working with my new band called The Rules. We’re in the studio now working on an album…we’ve done a few shows and the vibe is good and we got a few more show over the summer. We’re gonna put out a single very soon so look out for that.
Has big Roni got any more plans for a third Reprazent LP?
I don’t know what’s happening with Reprazent…
Were you pleased with the way your own Hidden Knowledge album turned out last year?
I was very happy with the way ‘Hidden Knowledge’ came out. For me it was a long time coming - I was working on the project for a min. I really enjoyed making the music. I think I pushed my sound a bit more and used some new tools in the process. But I think the best thing was that it lead me to creating the band, taking the whole thing next level. Now I’ve got big plans for a new Krust album and The Rules album.
You and Die are playing back-to-back in the gargantuan One Nation arena at Tranz-mission at Alexandra Palace in London on April 7th – the biggest DnB rave in the country! What generally happens when you two get in the mix together?
We’ve played b2b a few times and the result has been very good. It’s gonna be fire works. We have some new Full Cycle music to play so were excited.
Are you glad that DnB is more of a rave-led genre rather than a club one, if you catch my drift? You hardly ever get a 5000 capacity house arena in this country for example...
The way this music has grown over the years is crazy. And it looks set to get even bigger. There are no limits to what this music can do. It has travelled all over the world. And has been to the far reaches of the planet. We are still at the beginning of what this really is.
What kind of beats are you rolling out of the studio at the moment? Hectic nu skool jump-up? Smooth rollers? Or a mixture?
In the studio right now I am working on the band stuff and doing remixes of the album. I think we have got our sound locked down. The Cycle sound has got its roots firmly planted in the universe. We’re happy with that.
