Did anyone else go to this?

Jazzy Jeff stole the show & was off the F**kin Hook.

His Dj skills where 2nd 2 none - the best Technical Dj I've seen in any Genre.

For those that missed it thre's a full review of Soulheaven At Canvas feat MAW / Jazzy Jeff.

I'm still recovering from this...

All I can say is Jazzy Jeff Stole the show & he was off the F**kin' Hook!!! If you came for a House set - you

were mistaken - if you came to get down - ppl were on the ground litterally - inc. Breakdancing!

JJ dropped about 10 of my alltime breaks in the space of 2-3minutes - cutting live on vinyl his skills were ridiculous!!!

I resisted a while - but could not resist busting some James Brown Steps when he dropped "Give it up - turn it loose" (Clap your hands - stomp your feet - in the jungle Bro version) that was just too damn funky for words!!

Having already played a lengthy set down on the south coast UK (Homelands) Jeff motored up to London for this & hit the decks at aprox 4am. & had us rockin till aprox 6.30 am, Kenny (dope) had to have a peak & was also starring in amazement at the Jeff's dextrous hand work.

Here's a snapshot of what he was doing: In 8-bar chunks in a 2 minute period he moved from Micheal Jackson to Nirvana to Biggie Smalls to Eurythmics. This was true eclectic - ppls eclectic - enough to shut up the 'underground' campaigners who think everything with vocals or that is widely known is no good. Ultimately it was free, spontanious, riddimic & musical.

This was pure oldskool hip hop - made on the spot - As I noted that what was making it hip hop was Jeff's input - the live cutting scratching, effects - not the musical content - as he played only a few actual hip hop records which included pre-recorded raps or scratches.

Jeff had his apple laptop on the go using it every so often for links etc. - but the majority of this was live vinyl mixing. I'm not much one for rating technical DJs, scratching etc. - As my view is - that's all well & good - but you can get a sampler or drum machine make that pattern - I'm looking for musical content etc... - not just how the music is arrived at.

IMO - I would say Jeff was the best Hip Hop DJ I've seen - & one of the few DJs who can say they are a musical show- man in the musician sense. The set had worthy rap accompliment.

Having met Jeff I found him a friendly, warm geezer with alot of time for the crowd. All I can say is those block-parties he used to do must have been seminal. If only we could have seen these skills in the Fresh Prince T.V. Series(Jeff did some nice background music in this too!)

This place was rammed! - cubicly staked! - rush hour @ the nottinghill carnival proportions!!. This was one of the most successfull nights I've seen in a while.

The vibe was good tho - smiles, sweat & grooves all round - except for the 1 arsehole at the end of the night who threw a carton at Louie Vega & just missed us on the DJ Platform - Louie took it in good spirits - being the consumate pro - & MAW thru a wkd set also.

& some nice Soulful Shhhz in the other rooms too - a very soul weekender vibe going on - which was alot better than the VIP room which was playing some hi energy nonsense(sorry not my taste - sounded like instrumental erasure! )

Nice live percussion as usual at these Soulful House events - giving a go-go feel to the party proceedings.

It would have been interesting to know how many ppl came for Jazzy Jeff (ie not just for House music). As (younger) ppl where asking me "who's he?" my reply "That's Kenny Dope!"

MAW played a harder more 4/4 set than usual, playing alot of Jackin & Vocal Dubs (ie Just drums & vox stabs - s'posse the stuff that made them famous). I heard a few from the forthcoming Soulheaven / Blaze / Defected comp dropped by MAW also.

There was still a full house caining it till the end at 7.30am - & still game for the after party at The Egg till 4pm Sunday...

This was a good, successful result for the Soulful scene. WKD! - Soulheaven does it again - Keep on!!

& if you went to this event for the Hip Hop aspect - did you like the Soulful House being played also at this nite?
