hi chaps,
I'm trying to get my bass and drums to have that fat sound to them that is commonly used in House. I know they are H e a v i l y compressed giving that fat sound to them...I'm using Logic Pro 7, and was wondering if anyone had any facts/figures or plug settings that they had to recreate that warm fat house sound in the rhythm section? I've tried various things like bussing the two together then compressing them in the buss, but the signal goes a bit crazy with me...
Cheers,
Ben Collier |

There is no rule for compressor settings it depends on your sample quality and on your style and many other things. There is no way that someone will give you his settings couse it's not cool and it would not be interested if everybody has the same sound.First of all the best thing for you would be get some things and learn some basics of mastering, compressors and sound.
You can find some great tutorials on internet and ask for help on many forums out there...
I have some mastering rule for myself and it goes like this, put a compressor on each chanel to create differences between sounds and on the master bounce chanel place limiter, eq, compressor, gainer and limiter again but be careful you can kill some hi freq with limiter, also you'll need a spectrum analyzer to look at certain freq and there is a free one @ voxengo place plugins...Use google...
There al lots of tips but it takes time to learn them and to use them...

Hi, Thanks,
I dont mean to sound rude but I do know about this stuff, as I used to work full time at a professional pop music recording studio. I was just asking if anyone had any LP7 settings that they know that work... and no, everyone wont sound the same, because only losers are plagerists, and using the same settings is not plagerism... and no it doesnt really matter what sample quality im using, whether 8-bit or 24-bit @ 192khz cos at the end of the day a compressor is a compressor... |

IF the kick doesnt already sound cool without compression, it's not going to sound *really* cool once you slam it on there. Not only is it important in terms of frequency content, but seriously out of whack electronic kicks will freak a compressor.
Generally, when compressing a kick, I *personally* go 2 ways:
Either straight on zero-over limit it.
or
Slow attacks someplace between 30-75ms, and relatively fast releases (The lower the bass sound BTW, the slower the release needs to be). Attacks between 5-25ms begin to sound clicky to me.
But it all depends on the compressor. Some just really suck for this application.
The slamming sound of the kick has a lot to do with the mid and upper frequency content.
Also, the right kind of distortion or tape saturation can work wonders....
BTW. Kicks & 2 bus from house stuff sound pretty cool run through an SSL Channel Compressor (Not the Quad Bus Comp). _________________ -K@LR |
