Active just means the speakers are independently powered so no amp is required. As I mentioned on my previous post this will only benifit you.

'Near Field' means simply that. These speakers are designed for close proximity monitoring as opposed to 'Mid Field' monitors. Mid-Field monitors are bigger, have a bigger low frequency response and would be placed further away.

So yes, if you are investing in your first pair of monitors you buy Near Field Active speakers. Remember that unless you have jack or XLR outputs on your PC you will need a basic mixing desk. Although spending a bit on a mixing consle will do you favours in the long run. Even if you are just software based there will be a time when you get into recording. Then you have to think about Microphones! Thats another story altogether!

On that note, the guy that I work with & I are just coming onto that now. We've had to put up with using an SM58 so far. Thats a live mic and not for recording (generally).
