Sorry for the long post, I just feel like typing today...

The same thing can happen with a CD that happens with vinyl. A scratch on the CD will make it skip, or the laser that reads the CD could be slightly messed up. As for vinyl, the tiniest scratch on a record could make the record skip back one groove thus making it repeat over and over and over the same 3-5 beats, or the needle can just get worn out.

It all comes down to maintenance. I use CDs 100% of the time now. I converted from 100% vinyl to CD. I treat my CDs just like I did my vinyl. I dont touch the inside of the CD, only the edges. I baby them. I keep them in their cases and when I carry them, use an over-the-shoulder carrying case.

You're using this monstrocity

I would highly recommend upgrading to Pioneers in the future if you plan on using CDs more often. The difference can be compared to a Numark vinyl deck and a Technic vinyl deck. Technic is just all around better, but the Numarks is a perfect learning tool. My first CD deck was an AmericanDJ cdj. It was crappy as hell.

As for the decks not matching up, there are several reasons this COULD be happening.

Check my next post to see how to tell if your CD decks are "tuned" or whatever you want to call it.

1. Not saying you cant mix because simply I have no clue if you can or not BUT you may just have trouble mixing in general. The pitch on CD decks are usually looser and by default, not as precise. The amount of pitch can be adjusted though. If you set it to +4% to -4% then you have everything in between and it gives a much more accurate match. Most I think are around +-8% (or +-10%).

2. Maybe you have it matched up perfectly and it STILL gets off beat. WTF?? Heres why, based on my friends logic.

A friend of mine has several tracks released and spoke to me about different mastering processes. He mentioned some tracks, when mastered, are mastered with a reel to reel. Think of a film strip. Now instead of having a film play its a song. The speed the film moves will not always be 100% accurate. It will be about 0.05% slower or faster and then go back to 0.00. This flucuating speed throught an entire track will cause tracks to not match up, obviously.

You can not tell this happens on vinyl but in a digital form, you can tell. If you load the track into an audio program, such as LIVE for example, and put the tracks first beat on the 1 mark then turn on the metronome, most tracks will play to the beat of the Nome. If it doesnt, you can warp the track so that it does. This will fix the problem of it fluctuating when you play it in your cdj.

Now heres how you can tell if one of your decks is off:

Take the pitch of one track and set it to a BPM higher or lower than default (meaning: move the pitch so that its not at 0.00% but an eve BPM, 129.0, 140.0, etc)

This is easy. Let the track play some and adjust the pitch so that if you change the displayed pitch counter (the ?.?? number) the BPM will fluctuate between the desired BPM: It will change from 129 to 130 or whatever. Moving the pitch by a hairs length is a good way to tell (other than looking at the pitch counter in the display).

You want to keep the BPM set at this BPM. Now do the same thing with the other CD deck and match the BPM perfectly so if you adjust the pitch even a slight bit it will go up or down one BPM.

Now that both tracks are at the exact same BPM, start one track. Then start the other whenever you are comfortable. You are not "mixing" the tracks. Just testing the CD decks. If they play perfectly on beat for about a minute or longer, than you're fine. If they start to get off beat slightly after a few seconds, one of your CD decks is getting screwy.

You can have them serviced but if you can match a beat it shouldnt matter anyways. Just some tips.

as a psytrance dj, I only play on cd's as most of the music I play is not available on cd.

I have a huge vinyl collection of psy, but unfortunately the changes in dynamics (that loudness war!) has made it impossible to play out at the club I play at, it's like someone turned down the PA, regardless of gain matching.

I feel cd's do have some benifits... the instant start and the master tempo...
it's nice to be able to keep the track in key... matching the root notes and having them stay put is a real bonus for tightening up the mix...

I don't miss carrying a bag full of records to an outdoor party either...

but I do miss the nostalgia of vinyl, and going down to the record store to cue up the new release...

my 2 cents...
