So, can someone tell me what the difference between ambient and just plain trance is? I mean, I like both, but sometimes I don't really know WHAT genre my darn music is! LOL

HI DJ Gemini,
welcome to the Dance Music Forums

Many people have different opinons when it comes to discribing the difference between the two styles..trance music mainly developed out of early '90s techno scene, and has since split into two distinct strains—psychedelic (or Goa ) trance and progressive house.

trance is known as a sub-genre of electronic music that evolved from Ambient music or more-or-less freeform style of music derived from techno & is typified by blending the faster drumbeats of Rave music , Techno and House music with elements drawn from the Ambient style, sometimes this may not be the case with different producers.

The drumbeats in a trance track, while generally quicker, are a little more subdued in the mix and are run through significantly more effects than other styles of electronic music. a basic trance track could then be described as being comprised of a particular melodic and/or vocal hook, repetitive beats, melodic & deep hypnotic-like state sounds which is given presence over an uncomplicated bassline?, a simple drum pattern (which often includes snare and/or kick drum rolls to mark "big moments", and perhaps one or two other semi-quantified aural elements to provide texture and enhance the rhythm. However, not all trance fits that profile

Ambient music known to be from the origins of electronic music scene is produced at times to create an atmosphere designed to relax the listener with its soothing vibes, & containing more elements (sounds over beats) of chillout music, soothing vibes and sometimes crosses over into the tribal sounds & nature, etc..

Here is a good artical on the beginnings of Ambient music - interesting read

THE BEGINNINGS OF AMBIENT MUSIC

Hope this helps,

I'm really feeling the oldskool style trance. You know where the beats were slightly breaky. Im well into Ferry Corsten, he's still doin that. Oldskool style trance but in the new form.

If you really want to know more about the history of ambient music you should really check out Brian Eno (he is the daddy of modern ambient music) who has produced several ambient albums such as:-

"Music for airports",
"Music for films",
"Appollo",
"Taking tiger mountain by strategy"
"Discrete music",
"No pussy footing with Fripp (with Robert Fripp),
"Here come the warm jets"
"Another Green World",
"Neroli"
"Shutvo Assembley"
"My life in bush of ghosts (With David Burne)"

these are the ones that spring to mind"
