I've saved up some cash and am thinking about getting an akai mpc 1000
the music I produce ranges from breakbeat & drum n bass to psy trance and hardhouse
I know that the mpc's are well known for producing hip hop but they're also quite popular with breakbeat/dance producers, is there anyone who owns one that could give me a basic, honest review?
i know that there's sample cd's which you can buy that can be transfered to the mpc by u.s.b, are the expansion/preloaded samples a good quality?
i want to get a decent hardware compressor as well to go with it, ive been saving up for quite a while and it's been hard deciding what im going to buy, the nearest decent music shop to
where i live is about 130 kilometres away and everything they sell is expensive so when i go down i'l probably just try out the gear and buy some midi cables and then get the mpc from somewhere else |

I don't own an MPC, I've always trundeled on with the SC3000. However, I do know many owners of the ol' MPC's and they are all very happy with them. They are quality bit's of kit and offer you all the best sampling features, with that sought after un-quantized feel. I don't know anything about on board sounds, but buy it for the feel and tradition of the instrument. It's a lovely bit of kit, that won't do you wrong....
Hardware compressors...... Well, do you want to go analogue or digital? Analoge is probably the best way to go (I feel). It is more natural and just sounds right (to me). A major factor, is how much do you want to spend!!! You can really blow the bank out on these things. I have a TLAudio 5021 and I love the sound of it. Two valves (one in the pre-amp, one in compressor), good range off attack & release settings, hard/soft knee, stereo link. It's an all rounder at about £350 ish. Valve compression is a beauty, so have a listen..... _________________ Less is More |

I've got am MPC2000XL and it is fantastic!!! I do most of my sequencing in Logic, but you can transfer the song files over easily enough, plus you can dump all your SysEx, so if you use any hardware modules, it'll go straight to the sound, rather than you have to search it out...
If you're going to be doing live stuff, this is a must... _________________ Mmmm... |

thanks
i'd mainly be using it for home production, i like the idea of having all my favourite sounds stored on to an mpc and being able to play a rythm and work out ideas. ive got a few friends who live in my area that are into producing so instead of them bringing their gear to my house we could simply sample the sounds
is it possible to convert wav/mp3 files to mpc format or would they have to be sampled from the output of the computer? |

Oh yes!!! You just sample the sounds you want and then save them onto disc in Akai format... _________________ Mmmm... |
