Two computer discs holding the personal details of all families in the UK with a child under 16 have gone missing.
The Child Benefit data on them includes name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number and, where relevant, bank details of 25m people.
Chancellor Alistair Darling said there was no evidence the data had fallen into criminal hands - but urged people to monitor their bank accounts.
The Conservatives described the incident as a "catastrophic" failure.
In an emergency statement to MPs, Mr Darling apologised for what he described as an "extremely serious failure on the part of HMRC to protect sensitive personal data entrusted to it in breach of its own guidelines".
MPs gasped as Mr Darling told them: "The missing information contains details of all Child Benefit recipients: records for 25 million individuals and 7.25 million families. "

Aye someone has already lost their job over this. Another fck up by this goverment to add to the long list with Imigration,Violent offenders getting early release's and Peadophiles getting up to 1 year for abusing kids

I hope they don't continue with this stupid ID card scheme now, they have proved they can't be trusted with our details on more than one occasion! imagine someone loosing a disk with the entire countries personal details on them.
The things that really scare me is the way they seem to think saying we don't think they have fallen in to the wrong hands is the same as we know where they are and also the fact that this got lost over 20 days ago! |

This reminds me of someone I work with. She lost the documents for every employee and the documents were for security clearance. They contained all our families personal information, addresses, multiple important numbers, next of kin, everything. Not only did she lose it once, but twice. She wasnt even fired but instead moved from one office and into another building and given a personal office. Can I get a WTF on that one? Oh well...
I hope nothing bad happens to anyone because of this. 25 million...wow....
